In 1952, while Mercedes’ first post-war race car was winning major competitions like 24 Hours of Le Mans, 24 Hours of Nurburgring, and the infamous Mile Miglia, Max Hoffman had an idea. Max was the biggest and best importer of European cars to the USA. He had a lot of influence over the industry, and when he made a suggestion, car makers listened. It’s a good thing they listened, too, because without Max’s idea, we would never have received the 300sl Gullwing.
